Development [edit]

Men in Blackness (1997) [edit]

The moving picture is loosely based upon the comic book The Men in Black by Lowell Cunningham. Producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald optioned the rights to The Men in Blackness in 1992 and hired Ed Solomon to write a very faithful script. Parkes and MacDonald wanted Barry Sonnenfeld as managing director because he had helmed the darkly humorous The Addams Family unit and its sequel Addams Family unit Values. Sonnenfeld was fastened to Get Shorty (1995), so they approached Les Mayfield to direct, as they had heard about the positive reception to his remake of Phenomenon on 34th Street. They actually saw the film later and decided he was inappropriate. Men in Blackness was delayed and then as to allow Sonnenfeld to make it his next project after Get Shorty.[23]

Much of the initial script drafts were set hugger-mugger, with locations ranging from Kansas to Washington DC and Nevada. Sonnenfeld decided to change the location to New York City, because the manager felt New Yorkers would exist tolerant of aliens who behaved oddly while bearded. He also felt much of the city'south structures resembled flight saucers and rocket ships. Production designer Bo Welch designed the MIB headquarters with a 1960s tone in listen, because that was when their organization is formed. He cited influences from Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, who designed a final at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Beingness the arrival point of aliens on Earth, Welch felt MIB HQ had to resemble an airport.[23]

ILM provided most of the special furnishings. Rick Baker led the special furnishings of the film, which was the well-nigh complex in his career to engagement. He had to take approving from both director Barry Sonnenfeld and executive producer Steven Spielberg: "Information technology was like, 'Steven likes the caput on this one and Barry really likes the body on this one, then why don't yous exercise a mix and match?' And I'd say, considering information technology wouldn't brand any sense." Sonnenfeld likewise changed a lot of the film's aesthetic during pre-product: "I started out saying aliens shouldn't exist what humans perceive them to be. Why do they need optics? So Rick did these great designs, and I'd say, 'That'south smashing — just how do we know where he's looking?' I ended up where everyone else did, only I took three months."[24]

Filming began in March 1995. Five months into the shoot, the crew realized their ending was unexciting. It was originally meant to be a humorous existential debate betwixt Amanuensis J and the Issues, and five potential replacements were discussed. One of these had Laurel Weaver being neuralyzed and K remaining an agent. The change to a fight sequence bellyaching Rick Baker, as their animatronic Issues had to be replaced with computer-generated imagery. Farther changes were made during postal service-product to simplify the plotline involving the possession of the tiny galaxy. The Arquillians would hand over the galaxy to the Baltians, ending a long war. The bugs need to feed on the casualties of the war and steal it to continue the war. Through changing of subtitles, the images on MIB'due south main computer and Frank the Pug'southward dialogue, the Baltians were eliminated from the plot. Earth goes from being potentially destroyed in the crossfire between the two races into being possibly destroyed past the Arquillians to prevent the bugs getting the galaxy.[23]

Men in Black II (2002) [edit]

Despite some initial involvement from David Koepp (who left to work on Spider-Man),[25] the script for Men in Blackness II was written by Robert Gordon and later revised by Barry Fanaro (who added pop culture references, something which Gordon had deliberately avoided).[26] Sonnenfeld took upshot with the producers' focus on the love story between Will Smith's and Rosario Dawson's characters, maxim that "I learned on Wild Wild West that audiences didn't want to see Will as the direct man. And until Tommy comes back into the picture show, past definition Will'south the directly man."[25] Fanaro condensed the showtime part of the film and brought Agent M in before.[25] The climax of the 2nd film was originally to have taken place at New York City's Earth Trade Centre. This had to exist inverse post-obit the devastation of the buildings in the September xi attacks.[27] The twenty-four hour period after the attacks of September eleven, a spokesperson for the studio said that the ending would be refilmed.[28]

Supervising sound editor Skip Lievsay used a Synclavier to recreate and improve the original recording of the neuralyzer sound effect from the showtime motion picture (which was the sound of a strobe flash as it recycles) by removing some distortion.[29] For some of the scenes with the Serleena creature, the sound crew "took tree branches, put them inside a condom membrane and pushed that around and added some water."[29] For the special effects scene where the subway train is attacked by Jeff the Worm, a specially designed vise was used to beat a subway car and brand it wait every bit if it had been bitten in half.[26]

Men in Blackness 3 (2012) [edit]

The premise of the third flick was first proposed to Sonnenfeld by Smith during the filming of Men in Blackness 2 in 2002, with Smith suggesting that his character, Agent J, travel back in fourth dimension to save his partner, Agent One thousand, while at the same time exploring Amanuensis G's backstory. Sonnenfeld said the idea "turned out to exist a very long procedure of evolution, mainly considering of the knotting [sic] bug of time travel...."[30] The film was first announced on April 1, 2009, past Sony Pictures Entertainment president Rory Bruer during a Sony ShoWest presentation.[31] Past Oct 2009, Etan Cohen had been hired to write the screenplay.[32] As of March 2010, Volition Smith remained undecided whether to join this picture show or another, The Urban center That Sailed.[33] Sonnenfeld in May 2010 confirmed the return of the protagonists played by Tommy Lee Jones and Smith. Both had expressed interest in 2008 in reprising their roles.[34] [35] Other staff includes Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald equally producers, with Steven Spielberg as executive producer; all were producers of the two previous films.[36]

In June, author David Koepp was hired to rewrite the Cohen script.[37] On June eleven, 2010, the fan site SonyInsider.com posted what it described as a "clip [that] debuted at an sectional Sony 3D Tv set launch outcome at Sony Pictures Studios",[38] showing Smith dressed as Amanuensis J wearing 3-D glasses and stating, "I know what you're thinking — 'K.I.B.', 3-D, we're going to be blowing stuff up and all that. But that's not actually what we're doing right now. Nosotros're hither for one purpose, and for one purpose simply: Just to let you know that I'm most to make iii-D look good."[39] A teaser poster for the film was likewise released on September 21, 2010.[40] A third writer, Jeff Nathanson, was hired in November 2010 to rewrite the fourth dimension-travel segment of the script in which the story takes place in 1969.[41] Nathanson and Koepp, along with producer Spielberg, had previously worked together on the 2008 moving-picture show Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Men in Black: International (2019) [edit]

In February 2018, it was reported that Chris Hemsworth would star in the moving-picture show, which would be directed by F. Gary Gray.[42] The following calendar month, Tessa Thompson joined the cast.[43] In May 2018, it was reported that Liam Neeson was in talks to star in the film as the head of the Britain branch of the agency.[44] The film's script was written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway and would exist produced past Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes.[45] In June 2018, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall, and Les Twins were added to the bandage of the film.[46] [47] Danny Elfman, who scored the get-go three Men in Black films, returned to compose the score for the pic alongside Chris Bacon.[48]

Main photography on the film began on July 9, 2018, at Leavesden Studios and on location in London, and connected in Morocco, Italia, and New York City.[49] Emma Thompson was announced equally reprising her role as Amanuensis O in the movie subsequently that month.[l] In August 2018, Rebecca Ferguson joined the cast of the picture.[51] On October 17, Hemsworth confirmed that filming had wrapped.[52] Visual effects for the film were provided by Double Negative and supervised by Alessandro Ongaro with the help of Rodeo FX, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Method Studios.[53]
