How-do-you-do everyone,
When I try to run windows update I receive the error:
Windows could non search for new updates
An mistake occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.
Code 80080005: Windows update encountered an unknown fault.
I have had this problem for a number of months. I have tried the windows update reset, the fixit tool, the organisation readiness update tool and many other things - cypher has worked. Figured I would post here to see if in that location are any suggestions. I am willing to retry anything I have washed earlier.
Thank Yous,
Christine

How-do-you-do,
There could exist a number of problems associated with your issue. Do you have Windows configured for automated updating? Have you ran whatsoever scans for malware? Have you made any meaning changes to your arrangement prior to this outcome?
This could be a Winsock problem. Please open an elevated control prompt (Run every bit Administrator) then type NETSH WINSOCK RESET and printing enter. Y'all will be brash to reboot. Please exercise so and try updates again.
Also please run System File Checker by opening an elevated command prompt (Run as Administrator) and typing sfc /scannow. (note space betwixt sfc and /scannow. Allow information technology to run. This will attempt to repair any corrupt files. Please run two to three times.
Study back if this fails to solve the trouble.

To respond the initial questions:
1) I used to have windows configured for automatic update, simply when it stopped working, I turned information technology off.
two) Malwarebytes full scan returns no problems.
3) No major updates have been made to the calculator.
I ran the Winsock reset, rebooted the estimator and tried windows update over again. I get the same error as before.
I ran "sfc /scannow" and get the message "Windows Resources Protection could non starting time the repair service".

Okay. Could exist a problem with TrustedInstaller. Get to kickoff and type in services.msc and striking enter. Scroll downwards to Windows Modules Installer and double-click on it. Set the startup type to Manual so click OK.
And so try running sfc /scannow.
Allow us know if this resolves the result.

Hmmmm, are you going to the "windows orb" and clicking? A search box should open up. Here type in services.msc and and then hitting enter. Services should prove up at the top. If it doesn't then there is another outcome going on here
Try just typing "services" (without quotes) and hit enter. It should prove at top. If that does not work get to bottom right corner of screen and correct click. This will bring upwards Task Manager. Highlight and click to open Task Managing director. A Task Managing director window should open up. Bottom right in that window you will see "services". Highlight and click to open up. This volition open "services". Then follow instructions in post #iv.
Some virus infections will attempt to stop you lot from gaining access to these tools for self-preservation. Delight keep that in mind.Besides if your Firewall is turned off and antivirus is not working that is a inkling to possible infection.
Please post back with results.

I searched for services.msc and services. Goose egg came up.
I got Task Manager open up, clicked on the services tab so the services button. I scrolled down to Windows Modules Installer and opened it. The Startup type is already gear up to Manual, so I changed it to Disable and practical that, so inverse back to Manual and applied that. I tried sfc /scannow once more and I got the same message as earlier: "Windows Resources Protection could not showtime the repair service".
My firewall is on and anti-virus seems to be working. Whatever boosted virus checkers that yous recommend I run to exist certain I have no problem?

Only a thought but please check and brand sure estimator clock shows the correct engagement and time. Usually (co-ordinate to MS error codes catastrophe in ooo5)
ways access denied. And then it is important to make sure y'all are running every bit Administrator when performing Administrative Tasks.
To double-bank check delight click on First Orb and in the search box type cmd. At the top of the screen cmd should exist highlighted. Correct click on it and select Run equally Administrator. You will receive a prompt from Windows Command Processor select "yeah" . This will open up an elevated command window. Now type in sfc (space) /scannow hitting enter and allow it to run. Hopefully it volition run. If no joy
Let's try this: Open up Windows Update and click on Change Settings. Select "Never Check For Updates" in the dropdown and click OK. Then go out. At present become dorsum to Windows Update click on Change Settings then select Install Updates Automatically then click OK. Then endeavor manually checking for updates.
Also what was the final successful update installed and when (bank check Update History) and what was the first failure?
Exercise yous have a Repair cd/dvd or maybe an OEM DVD? May accept to exercise a Repair Install. This volition not affect files, etc.
Instructions can be constitute here: http://world wide web.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

I did effigy out why the search was not working correctly. In the Start Carte du jour properties, the option for "Search programs and Command Panel" was unchecked. One time I checked that option, the search worked as expected.
I did the next footstep. I started cmd as Administrator and ran sfc /scannow. Same error equally the other times.
I tried the adjacent step with windows update and it gave the same error (80080005).
My older history is gone. I cleaned it out in ane of my prior fix attempts. So I don't know what the last sucessful or showtime failed update (assuming I ignore Microsoft Security Essentials since that is notwithstanding getting updated).
I do have a OEM DVD and a repair CD, only this figurer is about 4 years erstwhile so the DVDs are Windows seven but I now accept SP1 installed. I recall this means I cannot utilize my DVDs; is that correct?

Is the fourth dimension and appointment correct on the reckoner? But click on the engagement and time in the lower right-paw corner. Also are you sure that
you are "logged on" equally the Administrator? Y'all tin can check past going into "User Accounts". Equally stated before you have to have Ambassador Privileges in order to run Authoritative Tasks such as "sfc /scannow". If y'all are not shown to be the "Administrator"
then create an "Administrator Business relationship" and then run sfc /scannow.
If still no resolution:
At this betoken I would propose a Repair Install. This volition not affect files, etc.
You lot can use your Original OEM DVD. Once the arrangement has completed the Repair Install Windows will Update accordingly including SP1.
Make sure you read the link provided in post #8.

Time and date is correct.
I have been starting the control prompts every bit administrator as has been requested (right click and select Run as Administator). Am I supposed to be logged on as admin? That sounds different than what the instructions have been and so far.

My problem fits the thread, just has different symptoms - I cannot get Windows Update to work at all.
I have a new (well, shop demo) Lenovo G570 laptop running Win vii Habitation Premium, x64, two.50Ghz, i5, 4Gb RAM, 1Tb HDD. A-virus (Kaspersky IS 2013) is installed and full scan run.
Selecting Windows Update brings upwards a console with a fat red left margin and the shield in red, with a "clear" cross on it. Clicking "Check for Updates" produces the fault message : "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is non running. Yous may need to restart your computer."
Restarting makes no difference (I've tried both cold and warm reboots, several times), and anyway the service is running. Both "Control panel > Admin Tools > Services" and "Start > All Progs >[etc] > Software Surroundings > Services" report that "wuauserv" is running, and then does a overnice utility called "What's Running".
Thank you Sikntired, I have tried both the solutions in post #2 - "Netsh winsock reset" (no problem) and "sfc /scannow" ("Windows Resources Protection did not observe any integrity violations") - without success. I have also looked in "Control Console > Programs > Plow Windows features on or off" but tin't see anything appropriate. (I wish I'd stayed with XP - I understood that !)
I have a "new" version of Win 7, i.eastward. without Service pack i or Whatever updates, and I experience vulnerable.
Anyone heard of this fault before ?
(My apologies if you lot have seen this before - I posted it yesterday, but it seems to accept vanished without trace !)
Steve
Sorry everyone - I encounter my earlier version has been re-threaded - Webmaster please delete this one !!

Cbstamm: Even while operating as the administrator windows seven restricts a lot of functions to preclude accidental damage. Right clicking and running as administrator allows you to utilize these functions without the demand to enter a seperate password.
Steve80:
Click beginning, correct click "Reckoner" and select "manage"
Expand "Services and Applications"
Select "Services"
Scroll downwards and select "Windows Update"
Click on "Beginning the service" (or right click and select start.)
If information technology is already running, click "Restart the service"
edit: spelling
